The city gas project envisages supply of piped natural gas (PNG) directly to the kitchen. It has the advantage of being cheaper and less inflammable than liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) which is widely in use.
The Government of India (GoI) approved a consortium of AG&P-LNG Marketing Pte Ltd, and Atlantic Gulf and Pacific Company of Manila Inc, in March 2019, for laying, building, operating, or expanding city gas distribution in Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam and Alappuzha districts. The network will cover 6087 sq km, and provide 18,51,111 domestic, piped natural gas connections with a contract period of eight years. A total of 291 CNG stations will form part of the project.
The City Gas Project executed by AG&P Pratham is gathering pace in the capital city. Hundreds of households have reportedly signed up for PNG connections. Pipe-laying work for the project is progressing in Vettucaud, Shangumugham and Kochu Veli.
