ISPS Code

International Ship and Port Facility Security (ISPS) Code is an amendment to the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) Convention (1974/1988)on Maritime security. It specifies security arrangements for ships, ports and government agencies. Foreign crew is not permitted to sign-in (join the ship) from Vizhinjam, since the port does not have ISPS Code.

Progress Made

Various proposals are made to demarcate port boundary viz. a rubble masonry wall 2.4m high with barbed wire fencing of 1m height, Perimeter Fence, CCTV System – comprising high sensitivity color cameras, a security office and check post at the entrance to the terminal, etc. The security arrangements proposed would have to get the approval of the Director General of Shipping, who is the designated authority under the ISPS code
